Welcome to Engine Publishing!

As work on our first product, Eureka: 501 Adventure Plots to Inspire Game Masters, nears completion, I can finally take a deep breath and consider other aspects of Engine Publishing as a company — like starting an in-house blog.

What You’ll Find Here

I already contribute to, and run, Gnome Stew, and the Engine Publishing blog isn’t going to replace or even overlap with the Stew.

Instead, this blog will be a different animal: primarily about Engine Publishing news, products, sales stats, and the business of publishing itself, as well as less frequently updated. I don’t have a posting schedule here, so when I have something to share, I’ll share it, and the rest of the time I’ll keep quiet.

For that reason, I highly recommend subscribing to our RSS or email feed. It’s free, offers full posts, and ensures that you’ll get the latest from the blog without having to check in all the time.

Inspiration

Both Engine Publishing and this blog in particular owe a lot to Fred Hicks of Evil Hat Productions. As a company, Evil Hat strikes me as being dedicated to doing the right thing, doing it well, and publishing books they love on their own terms — exactly what I want to do with Engine Publishing.

Fred himself publishes damned fine games, is generous with his time, and overflows with practical, enthusiastic advice about RPG publishing. He’s also transparent about Evil Hat’s sales numbers (and other aspects of the business), and his posts on that topic were hugely useful to me in figuring out how to start a publishing company and what to expect.

In a lot of ways, Evil Hat is one of the reasons I started Engine Publishing, and Fred’s blog, Deadly Fredly, is exactly the kind of company blog I want to run here. If I can capture a fraction of what Fred and Evil Hat have done, I’ll be a happy camper.

Thanks for reading this, and for checking out Engine Publishing. I hope you’ll be pleased with what we have in store for you — starting with Eureka, which will be out before GenCon.

Sweet! The gaming industry can only benefit from more companies like Evil Hat. I’m excited to see your product line as it emerges!

Thanks, mougoo! It’s a fun process, and it’s nice to have an outlet to write about it and enough breathing room (barely!) to actually do so. 😉
